4) 1st portrait shoot

Contact Sheet

This was a shoot I did with my friend in one of the studios at college. I wanted the focus to be on the model's expression and the setting, not on what the model was wearing; this is why I made him where I plain black, and then a plain white t shirt. My favourite shot from this shoot was the one with his hands on his face. I felt it worked well as his character looks distraught, yet you can't see his face so you cannot pinpoint his true emotion. I also felt it worked well because you can't see his face; you can't identify what he looks like. This area I wanted to explore more, alongside destruction and self perception.

This piece was created using similar effect used in the last shoots experiments. I duplicated the layer with the photo on, changed the opacity to 50% and then dragged it horizontally off centre. Overlapping areas have stronger colour and form the centre of the mirror image. The remaining areas, the colours stay the same as the 50% top layer lightens them, and the colour from the original photo comes through, therefor keeping the image symmetrical (after cropping). I increased the contrast and decreased the brightness of the image. This was to deepen the mood of the photo and make it more vibrant. I also tried lowering the saturation, but I felt it made the image weaker and a bit dull. Alternatively I created a black and white version of this photo which I also think works really well.

Adjusted the Brightness/Contrast
Black and White version

This image I used the 'ocean ripple' distortion filter. I also increased the brightness and decreased the contrast drastically. I adjusted the levels which gave a blinding flash effect on the photo which I liked, and felt related to why the model has his hands covering his face, more importantly his eyes. Finally I added a blue photo filter to tint the colour of the overall image to make it colder as the image originally was quite warm containing lots of oranges.

This affect was done by using a filter named 'Dust and Scratches'. I liked the effect it gave on the photo, especially with the eyes. I also loved how it only effected the model and not the background, and fits well with the destruction theme I've been playing around with. The effect is not very clean and is hard to adjust to give the right effect so I doubt I'll use it in the future. Dust and Scratches filter can be found under 'Filter' > 'Noise' > 'Dust and Scratches'.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

This effect was done buy using the filter 'Emboss'. (Filter > Stylize > Emboss) I'm not sure what the actual use for this filter is, but I felt it gave a nice affect in this image. This is definitely not one of my best pieces, but I wanted to show this area of experimentation. I doubt I will use this effect in the future.

This edit was me trying to replicate another artist's work.

I feel this would've worked better if I did most of it in the studio. I could create better lighting and have a real black backdrop as appose to having to cut my model out in photoshop. I could've even used some clear blue plastic so I didn't have to change the colours in photoshop.I think it  could fit in with a Sci-Fi themed piece or series,  or maybe in a fashion or film magazine.

I replicated this shoot in photoshop but cutting out my model using the magnetic selection tool, placing him onto a new document with a filled black background. I then lowered the saturation down to '-100' and adjusted the brightness to blend my model into the background. I then adjusted the colour balance to make all of his skin blue.

After revisiting this image and taking the saturation layer off and realised it gave a nice warm purple glow over my model. I much prefer this affect as it looks lot more natural,  and is a stronger image overall.

This is definitely my favourite edit of this shoot. I find the combination of the blurred character and the hard white lines works well together. I think I'm going to experiment more using 2 shapes in my photos.

I used the magnetic selection tool and cut out my model again, I then duplicated the layer so I had my original image and 2 cut outs of my model. I then lowered the opacity of the 1st cut out to 75% and then the 2nd cut out to 50%. I then dragged them a nudge left or right of my image holding down 'shift' so they did not move vertically. Once I was happy with moving my cut outs to give a motion blur effect, I selected the line tool out of the shapes drop down menu. I then changed the weight of the line to 20px, and the fill to white. Then I drew seven lines to created a zig-zag effect. Once I was happy with my zig-zag shape I rasterized all of the lines. This is so I could erase parts I didn't want easily. I used the magnetic selection tool to go along the edge of the t shirt, then I hooked around to the start created almost a semi-circle shape. Then I simply press delete (backspace) and the line has gone, I used the eraser tool to get rid of the line that weren't near the edge. I simply repeated this process every other line to give the effect the lines were circling around the model.

This is another one of my favourites from this shoot. I feel this idea could work well for as a fashion magazine front cover or article, or a poster for an actor or a musician. Showing different expressions could show the different emotions of the actor, model, artist. Adding the name of my model to this piece gives a different viewer a different mindset on the image. The viewer now whats to know who 'Simeon Man' is, what he does, why is he singled out. It makes the model more than 'a pretty face' and brings them back into the real world as someone.

I cut out some of my favourite shots and placed them all into one document. As I'd done before; I lowered the opacity to 50%, to blend all the different cut outs together. I felt it worked well but could have worked better if I used layer masks, which is something I was unaware of at the time of making this edit.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

This is a cropped and black and white version of my previous edit. I like this edit as I just has the faces of my model in them. I believe making it black and white drastically changes the mood of the photo. I'd think this version is more dramatic and meaningful, as appose to the other version, which looks more of a promotional piece rather than a piece of art.
